The Importance of Sunlight

  


For centuries man has had the notion that the sun has healing properties even so , there have been many practices of different cultures that use the sun for various health reasons. Through the years , this view has changed as many medical professionals  and  individuals have lamented on  sunbathing being completely dangerous to the skin and it being the leading cause of skin cancers, whilst the sun may be  play a factor in skin cancers, it is important to mention  that "there are several factors involved in the appearance of skin cancer. For instance, it may come from repeated exposure and sunburn, skin prototype,  genetic factors, and age, among others.

The areas of skin that are most susceptible to cancer are the most commonly exposed to the sun such as the face, hands, and neck. Sunburns greatly increase the risk of skin cancer. The type of skin is also decisive: people with lighter skin and eyes are at a higher risk   (Step to health ,  2021).  These are just some of the factors that can contribute to skin cancer. After world war 2 the use of the sun for healing was converted by the use of antibacterial drugs such as penicillin and streptomycin , it became widely available and sunlight soon began to lose its importance , of course in other traditions and practices the use of the sun for healing is still apparent.

 In discussing the benefits of sunbathing , it is also important to mention  that too much can also be harmful but in moderation, the sun has many healing benefits.


VITAMIN D

The hormone vitamin D does not derive from our own bodies but through our diets and the Sun.   The primary source of vitamin D for man is sunlight and the body can utilize vitamin D gotten from sunlight better than that gotten from food ( David , 2018). A lack of vitamin D in the body can lead to bone and teeth problems,  increase risk of infections  and the list goes on.
